catch that smile

Grant has been smiling now for a few weeks. It comes out when we squeal in excitement to see him (even if we're pretending once in a while) and when we dress him and he can bite his shirt. The problem comes when we point the camera at him, he then gets very serious and nothing can break his concentration. However, today I caught him after his bath...

If you want to see more there's a new photo album on Shutterfly for ya.

At the Ball Game

Is there a sign posted over the entrance to every stadium (which I somehow manage to never see) that reads, "Be drunk all who enter here"?

Certainly seemeed so at UNR on Friday night as Abby, Grant and I all experienced for the first time a Wolf Pack football game with our friends Steve, Teri, and Judah. And I must be getting old (or did they lower the legal drinking age in Nevada?), but a lot of the drinkers sure looked like college students.....

But if I'm getting older, so is Grant. He's quickly adding to his list of experiences as he is unwittingly being prepared for a life of world travel (he's already mastered one of the crucial skills: being able to sleep anywhere). Though not completely at home in the stadium, we can't blame him for being upset at the noise the first time around. Luckily for him, the touchdown cannon was at the other end of the field. Nevertheless, at the first eruption he spat out his pacifier quite forcefully.

Victory Sweet Victory

You'll never guess what Grant can do. We put him to bed at 10pm. I woke up at 1am, he was still sleeping. I woke up at 3 am, he was still sleeping (a tough one - he always wakes up at 3am). I woke up at 6am thinking he has got to be up but I couldn't stay awake to think anything more. I woke up at 7:15am and went to his room. There he lay in his crib looking up at his little mobile friends happy as a clam. He slept through the night!!!! Day after day he turns more and more into a real boy.

On The Rocks

Abby and I recently remembered how much we like rock climbing and how little we've done it in the last two years. So we decided to have a date at the rock gym last week. After an hour or two of struggling to complete climbs we knew we could have
done easily in our younger days, we signed up for a membership, knowing we needed an excuse to go more often. And so began the endlessly sore muscles.
As with golf, though I am the stronger climber, Abby's technique is better, so with her as my coach, it's only a matter of time until I'm blazing through those 5.12's and nailing the manky slopers on a V-5. But no matter your skill level, climbing makes a great date.

the first family pack trip

Saturday morning we decided we should go backpacking so we packed up, called for a permit, and up the mountain we sped. Who said you can't be spontaneous with a baby?? At least when he only weighs 12 lbs.

We bundled him up and made a little baby nest by our heads. Although I worried about the cold it turned out to be quite hot in the tent. I think I made him sweat. Either way I know he slept well. I thought my dad was in the tent with all the snoring. Don't be fooled, babies are not peaceful when they sleep - at least not this one.

The next morning we had some time for pictures. The little lake, God bless it, was not of the photogenic type but we hiked in 2.5 miles with 20 some lbs of camera gear so we figured we ought to shoot something. We got a lot of a bitter, bundled up Grant and I went on a mission to make dead trees look cool.

We recieved a lot of props on the trail for bringing our seven-week old, which was fun...but we decided it's still more fun bringing people who can pull their own weight on a pack trip. Mainly it was just something we had to do before he could possibly have a chance to protest.

Grant

Again with the cuteness. I can't make him stop.
